I have a question for the group regarding the all important tail on a new windmill. Is there a way to calculate the correct size or area of the tail, also the positioning of it,distance from, for example the front of the prop to is end,so when it is viewed from the ground it looks right. What I am doing is I have the windmill with blades fitted sitting up in the vice with the tail boom fitted and am putting card board cutouts on the boom and standing back to see the results and trying to imagine what it will look like on its tower. Hi Blue Have you seen this page http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/Docs/Furling.asp. It goes into the math of furling, make sure you have lots of coffee at hand. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

I collected stats from a bunch of windmills of various sizes and found a few "approximate" proportions. http://www3.telus.net/faheydumas/Wind_Turbine/Wind_Turbine_C omparison-i.htm There's a column where you can fill in numbers of your own too. If the page doesn't work (if you don't have Excel installed), then you can use the other version of the page: http://www3.telus.net/faheydumas/Wind_Turbine/Wind_Turbine_C omparison.htm PS I used equations from this site so the math should work out about the same, either way. Thanks for your replies, very good links, I recon I can follow the info. contained on them. But before I can use the calculations I will still have to complete the windmill, which leads back to my original post, I will set up the tail to look right to start with then use the sizes and distances in conjunction with the chart and formular on the links, the thing that concerns me is the weight of the tail so as to furl at my chosen wind speed. From a newbies point of view the generator gets most of the attention in the forum but the actual powering and controlling ie. prop and tail are in the background quite alot of the time, so I will see what I can do with the chart and formular on the links.
