Hello,

Recently I mounted a set of six, black plastic, 1.5m diameter blades from Eco Innovation upon my F&P wind turbine.

My F&P wind turbine is wired 7p6p, suitable for a 48V system.

After mounting the Eco Innovation blades I am under the impression that the blades will allow me to produce alot of power during gale force winds, yet for general day to day operation I am better off using perhaps those cheap modified chinese blades to produce usable power in less wind.

Do others on this forum agree with this belief?

As I havnt yet completed a successful F&P turbine, I dont know what sort of power output I can expect given certain wind conditions and blade setups. To date I havnt been very impressed with the power output of my turbine. I am unsure as to whether there is too much friction in my setup, my blades are inadequate or my expectations are too high. I was hoping to achieve 300rpm, 100Watt output in 8Knott winds.

Cheers

Thankyou.

I hope you are aware that the wind energy in approx 4m/s with a 1.5m dia rotor is approx 210W. The blades might be 25% efficient and the alternator might be 70% efficient. allow some more losses for rectifiers and the battery, inverter, and this does not come anywhere near 100W available to power loads. [closer to only 25W]

I doubt chinese blades will give much more power, unless the rotors dia is a whole lot bigger, approx 4x the rotor area would give you the 100W. This would be a 3m dia rotor. The problems this gives is that the alternator will then be probably incorrectly sized. Furling will need to be revised and the list goes on.

Hi Darcy

I tried those blades about 5 years ago, and I had the same results as you I'm afraid. Very poor performance on the F&P in normal wind conditions. They are ok if you get gale force winds

The chinese blades will work better, they have a diameter of about 2.2 meters.

The best oprions are either hand made PVC or timber blades, or a set of Trevors 2.5m diameter hollow fibreglass blades. I've run Trev's blades on a 7p2p stator into 12 volts, and have seen 340 watts.
