Just looked on the bom and Hamish is on a close path to Mackay, so hopefully Glenn will get all his wind mills tied down and everything safe.

Here's a tip we used to do in the pilara when a cyclone was coming around. Fill ya bath tub with beer and ice, when the power goes out put ya food in sealed bags in the fridge. When the beer runs out ya got plenty of water to drink and cold food thats still fresh....

When cyclone Steve ripped thru we did this and lasted the 7 days without power, water and with winds so strong you couldn't go outside.

Here's hopin that miss's you Glenn and I hope ya all prepared.

Cheers Bryan

Yes I'm a little anxious. Will know tomorrow if its a threat, and then I'll start taking stuff down and boarding up windows. I can take down the F&P windmill easily, but the Southern Cross is not so easy, so I'll climb up and tie it up to stop the turbine spinning. And I'll take the solar panels off the roof, I might be needing them if the power goes down for a few days so I'll put them somewhere safe. The only tree near the house is a big palm, but they tend to loose their leaves and stay upright in storms.

Fingers crossed.

Actually, does anyone know of the best way to secure roller doors to stop them blowing in or out. I was going to dynabolt the bottom rail to the floor, but this wont stop the middle bowing in or out.

Hi Gizmo,
I'm not sure I know what you mean by a roller door.
I have two buildings one with an overhead roll down door and one with two doors that come together in the midddle on a track at the top. since we get a few tornadoes here I attached a 2" x 8" x 12ft. board to the inside of the doors then attached another of the same to the one on the door then anchored it down with a short rebar through a hole I drilled in the wood. The rebar was bent in the shape of a hook to keep the board from sliding off. Also I drilled a hole in the concrete so I could drive the rebar down and remove it easily. Don't know if this helps on your door though.

Glenn,

in Atherton when Larry came through, I ran self drilling tech
screws through the rail-door-rail to pin them into place.
Only need about 4-5 in each side. The door I secured
survived, the other that I piled gear up against blew
in and hurled 200kg of stuff through the carport.

They screws are easily removed and can be used again.

sPuDd..
It should work ...in theory

Yeah David I think it would be called a overhead roll down door. The door itself is a length of corrugated steel that is fed off a roll at the top of the doorway.

Hey Spudd I did think about drilling through the rail into the door skin but I wasnt sure if this would affect the way the door slid in the rail once I took the screws out. I have added more screws to the rail and door frame to make the rail more rigid, and I've replaced the door locking bars with a full length steel bar that ties into the frame at both sides. Fingers crossed.

This is the latest tracking map. Its a nasty one

hay gizmo

tha only way to protect a roll up door is to brace the center with a x brace corner to corner and one across the center half way up then lever brace to the center. we lost 4 rollups during tonados last mothers day here in ga.usa. the only one that stood was one that was being worked on and had the bracing. It with stood winds apx 250mph for over 20 mins.
good look stay safe.

Hey Glenn, Is there any way you can fit a board verticaly behind the bar
that you installed so it would support the panels from moving inward?

David,
Something looked wrong with that side-ways picture...

Until I realized that TV broadcast from Australia looks like this when it gets up to North America...

CNN also looks like this when viewed in Australia...
