I've used http://www.weatherzone.com.au/, link on the front page of my web site. I do like that one adelaide found. And Ross's, I see your direction graph thingy there. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Yup... and the one that's NOT shown, is the real-time lightning tracking system. I'm fortunate enough to get a live feed (since I host one of the 6 australia-wide sensors!). It's ever so nice to get a warning when lightning is aproaching, and to be able to go back and look (during or after the event) at where, exactly, it struck and the magnitude of the strike. Man, if we could catch a couple of bolts *and store them* we wouldn't be building turbines! Here's a couple of recent strikes (times in UTC): 05/09/06 06:42:52.8892706 LAT= 43.68593 LON= 138.40900 AMP= 240.91K 05/09/06 06:47:08.6323560 LAT= 12.12690 LON= 154.39934 AMP= 135.65K Yes, that's 135 thousand amps and 240 thousand amps! |

Visiting Mother-in-laws flying huge kites in thunderstorms is my suggestion. ![]() Seriously though, I think a grounding stake connected to the tower by a very heavy cable is the first thing. I used 2x electricians earthing rods end in end to give 12 or 16ft(I forget exactly). like this, ![]() and for over kill. ![]() The secondly, "To Protect... Disconnect". These big knife switches are great for slip-ring windmills, and for those without, simply unplug the untwisting connector to disconnect the battery etc. ![]() Of course this comes with my standard "your cheques in the mail" warranty in cases of full direct lighting strike. PS. The there is always prayer and negotiation depending on who you wish to deal with, but I can't help you there. Lighting strike on wind gen.. make a great photo. was working fine... til the smoke got out. Cheers Gill _Cairns, FNQ |

Ahhhh,, can't ya tell a Bananabenda,, the old willy pong in the back ground of the pic. Standard dress code for us "shorts and thongs" types ,,, but a bit cold down this way lately --have to wrap up the "family jewels" against those westly winds.. Where do you get those "knife-switches" by the way --most of that stuff has gone to the metal re-cyclers years ago ?? Bruce Bushboy |

G'day Bruce, Yes. The copper & brass one was a bit of a find for sure. The one most available would be the one on the right. I believe it is your standard "pay your bill or we'll cut your power off" switch that is mounted on the pole outside your house. A lot of that stuff is throw out when they upgrade power poles. It's just a matter of keeping your eyes open as, in this area, it often sits on the ground where they've done the work waiting for their dump truck to dispose of the stuff. Why not a strip of insulating board, a couple of brass bolts and a removable copper bridge? "Beauuudiful!" ![]() was working fine... til the smoke got out. Cheers Gill _Cairns, FNQ |

G'day Vasi, Tower is not from crane. Both are radio mast. The top one was severely damaged when blown down in a cyclone may years ago. I bought it as scrap then rebuild it. The second one I've yet to erect. It's for the the wind gen in progress. Also a crank up radio mast. Mine are small @ 17.5 Meters & 22.5 Meters. Would love to score one of the tall towers to get well above the trees. It's on the wish list somewhere. was working fine... til the smoke got out. Cheers Gill _Cairns, FNQ |
