Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I am new to the forum and am probably treading on old ground but could someone please post plans (including measurements) on how to make an axial flux generator. I have built a vawt using 2 type 4 smart drives overdriven and intend to go to RMIT to do wind tunnel testing shortly to get specific data on how well my unit works regarding startup wind speed and watts using a variety of gearing and would like to do back to back comparisons with the axial flux. Wind tunnel testing is quite expensive and i would like to cram in as much as possible in one day. Thanks in advance.

Hi MR DD ,

I pretty sure you are not tredding on old ground , but I am pretty sure there are no comprehensive plans (including mesurements) in existance on this site , the Ax Fx I have built recently in conjunction with Gordon and the layout he put in his thread , it had a fair degree of trail and error and make it work as you go which one can do with a lathe , it is also different to the Ax that Gordon is building in a lot of areas .

I would imagine for a VAWT you would be looking for a cut-in speed under 40Rpm , which is completly different to a HAWT . My Ax is designed arround a voltage doubler and with out that it would not cut-in untill 200+Rpm .

I think you will have to go through the whole design process for a Ax Fx generator to suit your VAWT ,mabe check out these guys they have some pretty good looking VAWTs on the market " Urban Green Energy ".... here...Regards Phill..Edited by fillm 2009-07-27
