Being in Denmark, Im allowed to have a 1.1 meter diameter wt without approval. And having neighbours close, less than 25 metres, I want to make things bulletproof and not create these lightflashes as the sun hits the wings. Also I dont want to make excessive noise. So my plan is to put my wt, that Im already testing, in a cone, starting at the perimeter of wings, extending and expanding downwind. Mission of this is to catch wings in case of take off, and enhancing windspeed. Its extremely quiet as of now. The wt is the downwind type. The cone/wt will be placed on the roof of my workshop to gain height. Expected output is 100w peak. Generator is 3 phase motor, with pm drilled into rotor. Output in present state is 20 w peak. Wings (4) are sewer pipe, design from Zubwoofer (otherpower) Im building this for fun, using 2nd hand stuff. So far tower wings and generator has cost around 100 us$ My questions are: - did anyone try this cone stuff? - I plan to put on the wt sone sort of mechanical brake. - Has anyone succeded in runnig these small dia wt without furling? - Other comments? cheers, J |

Hi John Yeah this idea pop's up from time to time. It doesn't work as well as expected. The wind see's the cone as an obstacle, and most of the air will go around the cone, not into it. The best way to prove this to yourself would be to make a few experiments with a little turbine ( PC fan ), mounted first up in the wind, and then at the end of a periscope made from PVC pipe and PVC elbows.
