Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi,
Just joined this forum, although I’ve been looking over the back shed web site for some time (great site). Having very little electrical experience I would like to ask a few questions if that’s ok.

From what I’ve been looking at with the F&P stator, the longer the wire is the more volts it generates and the thicker the wire gauge the more the amps, is this correct.

If so how do you know how long you need the wire to generate a particular voltage, and how thick the gauge wire you need to reach the required amps.

Sorry for all the questions, I just like to understand the how’s and why’s before I start doing anything.

Many Thanks’

Rodney, the voltage generated is related to the number of turns in the coils, the strength of the magnets and the speed at which the magnets pass the coils.
The current (amps) that a wire can safely carry is related to the wire cross section area but its not quite as simple as you mention above.

Can I suggest you look up the articles on basic electricity elsewhere on this forum?
You are on the right track by wanting to understand the how's and why's, the internet is full of interesting articles related to electricity generation, its just a question of locating them

BTW, you are producing an odd character instead of a ', did you type your question on the forum or cut and paste it?
