First of all I wanted to thank those of you who answer questions on this forum. Everyones time is important and I thank you for giving yours freely.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a slip ring assembly for my windmills?

Does the head of the mill have any tendency to want to lift? I currently have a 12" long pipe nesteled into the main pole but I wanted to know if I need to bolt it in.

I also have a set of these chineses blades. Does anyone have a way of balancing them. They were supposed to be balanced but tjey are not and seem to have a definite wobble in them at about 500 rpm.

Again thanks for all of your help.

G'day azcity,
You'll need to be financially secure, but these are beauties, Click Here

Failing that, make your own....
My first mill uses horizontal slip rings

Yaw pivot is trailer stub axel and hub which suits this slip ring setup.

Others pivot types suit band style rings.
Good luck which ever way you go.

I've never heard of a mill popping off the top, but then again, I assume everyone bolts theirs on. I know I do.

I don't have any suggestions for balancing, but if you have balanced them well and are still getting vibration, check that each blade is at the exact same angle and to a lesser extent track the same arc when spun.

I saw something on Glenn Links page http://perryman.f2s.com/projects/wind%20turbine/turbine%20pa ge%2015.html

Easy to build - pictures are great in details.

I use a tilt tower, so I have to use something to stop my windmill falling off when I tilt it down. This page here and here explains how I did it.

To balance your blades, take the whole turbine off the front of the windmill, and set it on a small ball, like a golf ball or large marble, on a table. The idea is to made the turbine balance on the ball, so you need to add weights to the blades or hub untill you get as near as possible to a good balance.

I was working on the idea of installing slip rings into my father in-laws mill that I built. The cable we are using was too stiff for the mill to turn into the wind effectively.

After reading the other slip ring post I thought I could build those.

Before I had a chance my father in-law had found the "Mercotac" Model "230" 30amp 2 pole conductor and decided it was the go.

Details here:   http://www.mercotac.com/html/230.html

I simply built a bush that housed the unit with a grub screw to hold it in place. The bush is a neat fit down the pole and I taped a hole in the pole for a bolt to hold the unit in place 300mm down from the top of the mast.
The bottom of the bush I taped 2 screw holes and made a support cable out of stainless wire to hold the weight of the cable that falls to the ground.
Standard cable fitting to the top, and it all spins as free as a top. No cable resistance or winding up of the cables.

It all up cost about $200 for the stainless steel option, I could have done it cheaper, but not easier.

I forgot to take photos but when I have the unit down next I will take some if there is any interest.

Hi,

From lots of reading I suggest using cables only as the brushes will wear in time and need to be rather large to take the amps. I believe ecoinnovation in NZ sells slip rings.

It has been suggested to use drop cables instead and one will find that the tower will rarely yaw 360 degrees but will instead yaw nearly the same amount backwards and forwards. Have a plug within reach at the bottom and unwind the cable occasionally if it is twisted too far.

Taxation as a means of achieving prosperity is like a man standing inside a bucket trying to lift himself up.
