Dennis phoned this afternoon, he's found a new type of motor from a domestic appliance that looks like it may give the F&P a run for its money. He sent these photos throught tonight.

Dennis has found heaps of these motors, the 500 watt model, but they are due to be crushed in the next day or two. However they can be bought for $20 to $25 each, so Dennis is after expressions of interrest. He said he can get the motors put aside hopefully, but anyone who wants one needs to contact him. His home number is 08 838 21658 ( SA, Australia callers only, take into account the time difference ). Or email dlatham@chariot.net.au

The motor looks like a air core design, no lamination poles, and therefore no cogging. The stator is 100mm high ( 4 inch ), each magnet seen in the hub is 58 * 42 * 10mm.

If your interrested in buying a few, give Dennis a call before Lunch time tomorrow ( Friday 18th May ). I dont know anything about this motor, but it looks real good, might make a great windmill alternator.

Thanks, Glenn & Dennis,

Spoke to Dennis yesterday and have ordered three ,of different sizes,if possible.

The shaft size is quite large and this could be a big advantage in multiple set-up's. (no cogging, great).

At this price ,the magnets alone would be worth the purchase, especially if dennis can get some Neo. magnet rotors..

I have visited dennis and he has stayed at my place working on different wind gennies,,so I would suggest that what he has found would be very worthwhile. I therefore recommend to you the ordering ,before it's too late ,.

be quick,, Bruce

Another email from Dennis.....

Hi Glenn Please use this dialog on your site as you see fit. Apart from F and P and L.G. stepper motors that are suited to conversion are not commonly available. The Seeley Stepper motors are a big step up from what we are already doing being available with seven different output options. They should be tops for high torque slower moving blades. They will be absolutely useless with lightweight faster moving blades
Working on a building sites and playing around a bit I put a screwdriver against many motors ( Mostly Wrecks ) why they were stationary to see if I could scrounge magnets as I was interested in them.( The Magnets) The Seeley Air conditioner had these and I thought no more about it. About 3 years ago I revisited my memory of this as I had become involved in the F and P thing.
Of course the GURUS would have known about this for many years but never put it out. (AS IF) The Seeley Assembly plant is only 10 minutes away so a visit
was in order This happened at the above time and I tried a few times and then got an appointment to look at there facility. It was all protective gear with no cameras and no you cannot handle one or see inside it. (The Motor) It was very Hush Hush .They also said you need to know you will never see them at other places as they are all returned to this factory for rebuilding. DAMM DAMM.
Keeping my nose on the job I got wind on Wednesday (No pun Intended) that there was 4 of the above at a machinery ware house some hour away and they said $20 to $25 each. I nearly needed a police escort to get there. On buying them today (Thursday morning) I was told that they had another 100 or so coming in later in the day. (BINGO BIG TIME) They also said they would be
put through the metal crusher almost straight away as they needed the room. I have delayed them a little but I will have act quickly to stop this happening. With a little sweet talk I hope to allow time for people to
contact me ASAP to let them get some of these Stepper Motors too.
Apart from the information with the photos you will need to have strong tower with as mentioned above plenty of torque at low speed. They mount on a round 40mm (aprox) pipe which goes right thru the unit and will be excellent for the tail and fixing to your tower.

They have an overall diameter of 370mm by 160mm thick and weigh in at 10 kg. The F and Ps weigh 7kg.
They have 2 outer plastic sides which are easily
pulled apart. They are not waterproof. All models look the same from the outside.
The magnets are loose as the as they are held in place by the dividing posts. They would be dead simple to change.
The 20 magnets are 58mm high by 42 mm wide and 10mm thick being north and south facing side by side. The removable outer steel ring is heavy duty and much better than F and P. This set up nearly falls together.
The 60 coils are 100mm long and overlap adjacent coils not unlike a regular motor. (Not like F and P) There is twice as much wire used with it being the same wire diameter as the 80 series. They are 3 phase Star with the delta ends being easily accessed. They obviously can be reconfigured but it is very early days for this.
At this very early stage I have not run one. When turning a Model 500 manually there is no cogging (NO COGGING). It feels like a slightly tight bearing but is as smooth as. Yet to see how it fluxes?
They state they are extremely quiet. Have not heard them yet. The larger output units have NEOS.

IN CLOSING ALTHOUGH NOT TESTED and considering the price the SEELEY STEPPER MOTORS LOOK EXTREMELY PROMISING. A Regular F and P as a Washing Machine uses
165 watts and the smaller Seeleys use 500 watts as Air Conditioners.

This may be our only opportunity to get into this one. It of course opens up another can of worms but that is what this project is all about. I will be into this up to my armpits. Postage may cost as much or more than the cost of these units. IT IS NOW UP TO YOU.
REGARDS DENNIS LATHAM

Hi Everyone The pressure is now off buying these units . I now have 54 of them in my trailer at home here. Aprox 1/3 are 1500 watts and do not have Neos as I had been told by Seeley. Another 1/3 are 500 watts with the remainder in between. When I got to pick them up this afternoon the Assistant Manager and a helper were smashing all 200 or so of them up and it was a big heap of confusion. It appears that they are not allowed to sell electric motors due to insurance liability. This was why they were cheap at $20 as they were being sold at scrap metal prices. I got 16 unsmashed ones and was told that there were some plastic covers left over from the last batch If I wanted these it was going to cost $25 a unit in total. They said I was the only person to buy them for windmill purposes ( Do not tell my Wife)That makes the bashed base price of each unit $25 and it will cost a further $10 for me to clean and change the plastic covers and check there Electrical Integrity. Building strong boxes and arranging Freight and or Postage is another $10 as it is not a 5 minute exercise. That makes it $45 per unit which is very cheap When I have finished checking and rebuilding these units I will look at this web site to establish there sale and to who Payment will be via my Mastercard and a telephone call to establish its numbers So keep looking at the Back Shed

Hi Dennis,, you have done a great effort in getting these motors --thank you very much....

Phill and I will take 8 of various wattages ,and pay for your packaging, freight, time ,Etc.--no matter what the eventual end result is. That's our problem.......

Thanks for your efforts,
Bruce and Phill.

Hello Dennis!
This is great, they look perfect for turbines. If its not to late would I be able to get 4 of these? Would prefer the 1500's, but beggers can't be choosers
Are they able to be sent to Melbourne?
If you can sell me some I can transfer the money straight away.
Thank you so much for the work your doing here, much appreciated!
Cheers,
Andrew

Great looking machine - do the connecting cables feed down the shaft? Do I take it that some coils span 3 pegs and other coils span only 2? See the Seeley home pages for some pics of these motors inside the fans they drive.

Hi All Some more info. Since I am stripping ,cleaning, rebuilding and checking the electrics I have found. The first 6 completed all had there cover plates busted and one had a broken wire from a loose magnet. Apart from the above and being dirty they were fine.
Here is a bit more technical stuff. The units are described as being a Brushless DC Motor. As an electric motor the 500 watt unit draws 3.5 amps which in theory should produce 840 watts as a generator with a blade capacity of about 1 HP. ( Speed / Torque ? )
The big 1500 watt draws 9.8 amps with an output of 2280 watts with a blade capacity of about 3 HP.At this stage it is still very speculative however they are serious machines and as said before will require big gutsy blades.
Some other answers. The green covers which have the magnets between them rotate around the fixed centre pipe ( not shown in photos). This long pipe will be about 43 mm with the 3 output wires going into it and out past the covers and into your rectifiers. Each of the 20 magnets spans 6 legs of 6 coils but I have not properly researched this.
They the warehouse had WRECKED ABOUT 200 units some 6 months ago for there copper value . SHAME SHAME It may be possible to get in on the next lot and try to overcome the BIG HAMMER. With a lot of us using them anything might happen . In closing could I ask that no one contacts Seeley as it may be counter productive at this early stage. They may not like what we are doing, who knows. I will start to make some delivery boxes this coming week. The boxed and checked generators ready for posting will cost $45 each. All for now Dennis L

Good morning ,, was thinking about these motors last night..Something just didn't sit right,!!, anyhow I finally understand ,. They are the motors that are in thousands of those ugly brown boxes on top of house roof's--We don't see them here in Qld ,so that's why i was confused.
They are purely for driving a cylinder fan that cools the water that cools the air,(I think). ahhh, Evaporative cooling system...

No wonder there are hundreds of them in South Aust., thats the major user and manufacturing plant .

Now I know why the shaft is not available--it's also a major part of the fan ,so,if a motor needs replacing ,then the shaft stays and just the motor slides off and the new motor slides back on the existing shaft..(I think).

Anyhow,, thanks to Dennis for "discovering" these,we'll soon see if they are suitable ---

I think the reason is plastic material is unsuitable for hot and humidity climate that what l was thinking for maybe i am wrong or right
