Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hiya Guys.

The web site will be moved tomorrow ( Wednesday 23rd ) mid afternoon. Before I move the site, I'll "Lock" the forum. This means you wont be able to use the forum section of the web site untill the DNS servers are updated. In short, the internet will need to learn about the change, and this can take anywhere between a couple of hours to a couple of days.

Once the DNS servers are updated, everything will be as it was, fingers crossed

I have to move the web site because it currently lives on the servers at my workplace, I'm changing jobs in a few weeks so needed to find a new home for thebackshed.com

Bit late now, Glenn, but you probably should have dropped the TTLs down to 3600 a week ago, then down to 30 tommorow morning bright and early.

Move the machine, update the DNS and put back the old TTL (currently 86400 which I reckon is a bit long anyway) and everyone should have the new data within a few seconds.

Rescheduled!

Dont you just hate it when they phone up 1 hour before the big event and ask if we can do this tomorrow!

Will now transfer the site on Thursday instead of today.

Yeah maybe I do need a bigger hammer.
Hey Ross, backing the TTL off before the move is a good idea, but a bit beyond my abilities I'm afrair, I'm just a humble web administrator and programmer, and not familiar with the dark side of TCP-IP. So much to learn in just one little life time.

Hopefully the move will happen on Thursday arvo. The web site is been moved to a local ISP, who is also an old mate so it should be well taken care of.

Working fine in the States.

Re:Dwyer "If it dont fit, use a rubber hammer this time"

Need a lead hammer like I had for my old RHD Sunbeam Alpine Knock-Off hubs.

Does not leave marks .... warranty still good.

Glenn I do not know if it is Trev's problem but sometime in the last week or two I started getting Invalid host name when I tried to go to this site. I was using the pull down list off the address bar that had worked before. I had to use a different link to get here and now use that address off my pull down menu.

The old addy did not have www. in it.

There are two nameservers listed as authorative for your domain, Glenn:
Name Server.......... dns1.orion-online.com.au
Name Server.......... gateway.audiovation.com.au

dig @dns1.orion-online.com.au thebackshed.com any

;; ANSWER SECTION:
thebackshed.com. 1D IN A 203.55.62.254

dig @dns1.orion-online.com.au www.thebackshed.com any
;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.thebackshed.com. 1D IN A 203.55.62.254

That's all good....

$ dig @gateway.audiovation.com.au www.thebackshed.com any

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.thebackshed.com. 1D IN A 203.55.62.254

That's fine...

$ dig @gateway.audiovation.com.au thebackshed.com any

;; ANSWER SECTION:
thebackshed.com. 1D IN SOA dns1.orion-online.com.au. postmaster.orion-online.com.au.

That's broken.

Whoever it is at audiovation has screwed your zonefile.

Tell them to fix it, or get them to be authorative secondary and get their data from the other nameserver.

The result is that everyone who asks for www.thebackshed.com *SHOULD* get the right thing, but every second request for "thebackshed.com" will get no valid response.

I *HATE* it when people break DNS. If they can't do it RIGHT they should not be doing it AT ALL!

Hi all,
The website is not my problem.
It was a cookie problem in my computer.
The lovely ladies fixed it up for me.

Hey Ross. Thanks for that. I'll pass it on to the guy that runs the primary DNS ( Orion-online ). DNS is all smoke and mirrors to me.

G'day Glenn,
Thought it was just me but now that KiwiJojn has mentioned that he has never had a reply from an email sent via this site, I too will advise it's the same for me.

Just when you had nothing to do...Hay!?
was working fine... til the smoke got out.

I've just sent a test email to both Gill and KiwiJohn using the forum email thingy. If Gill and KiwiJohn could send an email to eachother and reply to eachother, that would help testing, see if they get through ok.

Whoa wait up... I call shenanigans here... The secondary is correctly reporting the SOA (Start of Authority) for thebackshed.com..
A dig (same syntax as you used) on a number of systems reports a lot more information than that posted..

I cannot duplicate your results either externally or internally. A quick look at www.dnsreport.com will validate the integrity of the zone file for the back shed. Should I assume your last rant would also apply to people building windmills ?

Mail is another matter, as Glenn has absolute control over the entire server. The server is virtualized and Glenn has full external access. I dont touch it unless requested to do so.
Glenn if you need me to assist with any troubleshooting just gimme a call..

Yes, indeed it is at the moment. At the time I checked it, I was (consistently) getting *ONLY* an SOA record, no additional data. I'm now getting an A record, two NS records and an MX (pref 10) record. They were not being returned at the time I posted.

Yes, but it should have been reporting an A record (which as we both agree, it is now....) I also notice the serial number s NOT consistent with a change being made since I reported it - so I don't know what was going on!

I didn't experience it myself, as I always go (as force of habit or good practice), to the host itself. The poster immediately before mine says:

The old addy did not have www. in it.

Yup, I agree, it seems fine now... but at least one other poster experienced problems, which seemed to be supported by my own (quick, non-exhaustive) check.

Largely, yes. "Do it right." (the "or don't do it" is implied. Those who know me will confirm I live by that rule, but it makes me a very hard taskmaster)
