Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi. I think it's really cool that here is a message-board almost entirely devoted to discussions about turning washing-machine motors into generators.

Anyway, I'm new to it so I have a couple of questions:
1 - Is this a brushless motor? Is there anything that wears out or needs maintainence?
2 - Are we talking AC here, and if so does it put out 240 Volts? And how widely does the voltage vary with wind force?
3 - Can you direct me to any threads or other resources that give step-by-step instructions on how to prepare this generator and fit it on a wind turbine (I'll be using a vawt)?

thanks,
Steve NSW

Hi Mossy

Yes its a brushless motor, and it should last for years with the right care to keep moisture out and UV protection. I always paint my stators with varnish to keep the water out, and paint the magnet hub with outdoor paint for UV protection. The bearings should last a couple of years too.

Yes the output is AC, but not very stable, not like the 240V of your normal mains supply. It needs to be converted to DC and stored in batteries, connected to an inverter to make regulated 240V AC.

There is more info about the F&P here http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/AssemblyA.asp

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now.
