Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Firstly let me start by saying hi and that I am very interested in alternate forms of energy and am still very very inexperienced with electrical concepts. Notwithstanding, I am keen and a pretty quick learner so here I am.

I have access to any number of ceiling fans and for my first project, I would like to make a wind generator out of one. I would appreciate any comments (in layman's terms) as to the best way to do this.

Thanks in advance.

G'day Mich@el,
Firstly let me welcome you to the forum. It's always good to see those lean(on experience/knowledge)be keen to learn.

You'll see from this web site, all wind generator projects use permenente magnet motors as the basis of building the wind generator. That's not to say other types of motors can not be used or converted, it's that they require a far greater knowledge in several fields than most are prepared to attempt. You state a limited knowledge of 'electrical concepts' therefor I recommend that you choose a permanent magnet motor for your first project. Your ceiling fan motors don't have permanent magnets.

Any of Glenn's projects are worthy for a first attempt.
Certainly my pick is the F&P as it is more than a toy and generates adequate power to supplement a solar array.

Whatever you choose, if your stuck, use the forum.

Good luck. Edited by Gill 2007-07-11
