Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Definitely outside the square, but workable(of sorts).

I reckon this man could do something with the hot air and bs in our Parliament House too.
was working fine... til the smoke got out.

It would be easy enough to take a cable from up your tree and bring it down through a couple of turns around the axle of your F&P with a weight or big spring to return the cable. You would get rather 'peaky' power but better than nothing and easier than most!

It might also be a very sneaky way to make a small amount of unobtrusive power in a small suburban back yard, where neighbors or the council would frown upon building a serious wind machine.

Fairly close to the ground, where there are a lot of up wind buildings, the wind will be more gusty, causing more tree movement than in a proper open wind site.

It is a crazy idea, but it may have some stealth application if very fine wire is used.

If I were going to try this, I would prefer a very long spring to weights. Weights have inertia and might tend to snap the wire. Bungee cord would supply a more constant return force. An F&P would be ideal, because it will produce useful ac power when rotated in both directions.

I must have unusual trees where I live when the wind blows they tend to bow slightly or significantly and maybe wobble a small amount.

They don’t oscillate much at all.

If someone can source some 10Hz x 1m oscillation Norfolk Island Pine tree seeds I will start a campaign to replace the existing Norfolk Island Pines common in the esplanade and beachside suburbs of Adelaide with this subspecies.

I remember this:
