Hiya guys. Thinking about revamping the web site a little. When I started the web site is was very much a blog, a site about my windmills and projects. Since then the site has grown an awful lot, especially the forums. So I want to expand the web site to include more information about solar and hydro power generation, and even look at topics like power saving lights, passive heating, that sort of thing. But it will still be, and always be, a workshop project site, all home made stuff. So I've come up with a new page headder. ![]() Hydro isnt included at this stage, need someone to write up a article or two about their home made hydro installation ( hint hint ). Let me know what you think, I dont want to change the header unless you guys like it. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Well, change is good they say... I like "Homegrown Power", even though "The Back Shed" is as Aussie as it gets. :) If going for a generic/universal feel, I'd change the sub heading to "DIY Projects from The Back Shed". A lot of the projects featured span the rainbow of trade’s disciplines, from Plumbing and Welding to Software and Communications. And like you say, that will only grow with Hydro etc. sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |

G'day Glenn, I'll kick off by saying I don't mind "Homegrown Power". It has a solid non pretentious ring to it. I think it is representative of most members interests. I would however change "Wind and solar" to "Alternate energy" or perhaps "Renewable Energy" in the second line as this opens it up to a broader range of projects. I think of not only micro hydro but river generators both tidal and fresh as also included in this description. Also I am keen to substitute the dump load with a galvanometer to generate hydrogen for long term energy storage. If only the cost of fuel cells would come down. Once again this comes under the broader category of 'alternate energy'. Whilst broadening topic coverage, I would still like to see it remain very much technical in nature as I have no interest in Life Style, Conservation, Philosophical, Religious or Political associated content here. I know I have over stated the changes you indicated, but it gives an idea what I think. Next Please... was working fine... til the smoke got out. Cheers Gill _Cairns, FNQ |

"Renewable Energy projects from The Back Shed" I like that. "DIY projects" was ok but a little broard, I realy want people to know this site is about making your own clean power. I'm working on a couple of other "The Back Shed" based sites, my CNC site www.thebackshed.com/cnc and a PicAxe site, not yet online, so I dont want to tie the name down to one subject. I totaly agree. Apart from the "My 2 Cents" section of the forums, I'll always keep religion, politics, etc out of it. Hi Guys, As a newbie from the other side of the globe, please accept my two pennyworth. I think the name change is great, and should help people find us when googling this subject. "Homegrown" and "renewable" must be universally accepted keywords for this type of thing, so I think it is will make an improvement to an already brillant site. Go for it Gizmo ! Bernie the Bolt I'd rather be sailing! |

Hi Gizmo, Alternative energy does open the door for all and sundry. Maybe not where you plan to head. Renewable energy relates more to current forum participants postings. Good luck with whatever you choose, just keep thebackshed link. cheers, Gordon. become more energy aware |

G'day Glenn, I think it's fine the way it is, but if you want to change it, how about; DIY POWER GENERATION wind, solar, hydro or DIY RENEWABLE POWER wind, solar, hydro Central Victorian highlands |

The seeds already been planted mate. I wonder if homegrown is meant to be two words? I know DIY wasn't understood by some over seas visitors, and about half of the internet traffic is from places other than Australia. I do want to keep an Ozy feel to the site, while making it more understandable for other countries. The words "The Back Shed", and photo of the windmill, will stay for sure. Hi Glenn,, I like your heading just fine ,the one with the windmill at the start of the posting. This site is equal to the best DIY ' ers I have come across-maybe a touch better, cause it's so close to our mates and only a telephone call away-- I'm on here every morning and sometimes a few times a day,,I actually have found myself using the site as a reference source,so many great ideas. Special thanks to Glenn ,, Bruce Bushboy |

Hi, Good idea for the name change, as windmills are beautiful machines, but so are solar panels, and many other machines that derive energy from nature. I like the "Renewable Energy projects from The Back Shed" idea the best. The "Renewable Energy" part is important I think, as it auto covers anything the forum could, and should grow into. Art. If not actually, then potentially. |

How about this one. ![]() I'm still thinking about the main name. Maybe a bit long. I like the site names like OtherPower, Fieldlines, GotWind, short and to the point. Might have a think over the weekend, there is no rush. But Home Grown Power is too the point as well, might grow on me. I hate picking names and logo's Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

G'day Glenn' I don't like the 3 word version. That makes it to long a eyeful/mouthful for a name. I know Supernerd did not stick with dictionary grammar for it's name any more than Quickasair did. HomeGrown Power for me. Giving it more thought, the name as good is 'DIY Power'. This flows on as an expansion of DIY Windmills so will be recognisable by return visitors to the site. I'm much less concerned by their ignorance of the 'Do It Yourself' abbreviation. I feel to often we do it like the yanks for acceptance abroad. But this site is uniquely Australasian (gotta include the Kiwis), proud, and I think that has to be accepted by the world. Then again we could go with BYO Power (Brew Your Own Power), but perhaps byo is an another occerism? Also HomeBrew Power has a good appealing Aussie ring to it. RollYourOwn Power would be lost on mosts understanding so better forget that one. DIY Power ~ Renewable energy from The Back Shed HomeBrew Power ~ The Back Shed approach to RE projects Power Surge ~ Renewable energy from The Back Shed Do Generation ~ RE projects 4 U from The Back Shed was working fine... til the smoke got out. Gee Gill, you've got some good idea's there. There's a HomeBrew power in the UK www.homebrewpower.co.uk. Power Surge is catchy. Do Generation, how about "Go Generate"? DIY Power is good, like you say very similar to the old name. Go Generate is sounding better the more I say it. RollYourOwn, hmm. Funny story, may have told it once before. I was in the USA a couple of years ago, sitting at a bar in Orlando, and the waitress picked up I was from Oz. She told me a story about another Ozy in there the week before. He had a few drinks and told her he was just going outside to "Roll a fag". "You going to do what!" she said. For our international friends, "roll a fag" means roll a smoke/cigarette. "Rollies" as we call them are where you buy the tobaco, filters and papers to "Roll your own", its cheaper and they tasted better. Its been 11 months since my last smoke, but thats another story.
