Following Ed Lenz' Lenz2 VAWT design, I made an attempt at building a lenz2 that is about 18 inches in diameter and 21 inches tall. I was surprised how well it worked compared to my other attempts at Savonius-style windmills.

I used a 24 volt DC motor from a Ryobi battery-operated lawnmower (it turns the blade). The output was dismal in 15 mph of wind. Obviously this is not the right generator for something like this. Right now I'm not worried about this. The design of the turbine is more important for now.

One person who viewed the project made the comment that I was not actually getting lift from the windmill and I didn't understand the explanation. His comment was that the pivot point had to be moved forward to get any lift but I don't really understand what he is referring to. I'm sure someone here can critique my execution of the design and tell me how to improve it.
