Would a 10m flagpole rated for a 3.7 square meter flag in 45 meter/sec winds be strong enough to hold a wind generator? I was planning on using one with 0.55m^2 prop area (combined area of all three propellers) and a prop diameter of 2.65m.

I was also thinking of using an aluminum tower that I saw at www.universaltowers.com. They are light and rated for stronger winds for a given square foot exposed sail.

My thoughts are flag poles are good to fly flags from.

How heavy would the mill be? You may still need to use a gin pole and guy ropes to raise the mill. Flag poles usually bend somewhat in the wind. I would not want my mill to be on the top of a moving stick. I still have guys on a 100mm dia steel pole that is bolted in 2 places to my house. My mill is in a domestic location, so it is appropriate that the tower is really strong.

The question you have to ask is, What happens when the pole fails? 10m is quite a way for the mill to come down from.

cheers, Gordon.
