I am brand new to wind power...

I would like to make a small vawt and/or hawt that uses a homebuilt generator. I have seen some plans and instructions for 12" diameter units with 24 permanent magnets and wound coils.

If I were to use 8lb pull small 3/4" round permanent magnets - what would be the best diameter and guage of magnet wire to use?

What kind of power should I expect a small generator like this to generate? I may ant to charge 2 6v batteries, or more if possible.

Thanks!

Hi AbinBoston, welcome to the site

First up, how thick are those magnets?
And whats your location like, out in the open or in a back yard.

Being a VAWT, dont expect too much power unless you build big, VAWTS are good for back yards and turbulent wind, but not the best choice if you can get it up in the clean air, go for a HAWT if you can.

Also check out
OtherPower.com for more info on the axial flux alternators, it sounds like thats the type your building.
