Hello there!
I'm Simon, I'm interested in electronics, mechanical, Engines, RC stuff ect.
Just found this site through the BJblaster website, I saw the page about the smart drive motors and rekindled thoughts of always wanting to make a SVO powered back-up generator.
So just wondering how I would go doing this? I was thinking of using 3-4 F&P motors running off a Timing/V-belt on the back of the motor, then the output transfered to some BIG old UPS units. Do you think this would work?
I'm a bit confused about what the motors output is, 12v? AC/DC?

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon, welcome to the site.

Whats a SVO?

OK

It depends on what you want to achieve with this. The easy way would be to just grab a 2nd hand car or truck alternator and bolt that to the motor, easy. An automotive alternator can supply several hundred watts, is self regulating and reliable.

But if you like to tinker, then yep you could use a couple of F&P's. Your biggest problem will be matching the F&P outputs to the battery/UPS.

Hi All,

Trev says his hilux was 108kW. Not sure what model?

At idle you would probably still have miles too much power. Under loading and low rpm would reduce the service life of the motor.

I would be looking at a ride on mower or stuffed genset of < 5kW and matching rpm and loading with a gearbox etc.

If you go to the bother of replicating a concept, then may as well biuld it to last a while... Gordon.

That would be a 2.7 litre petrol motor - definitely not a diesel as they are only half that - my 2.8L diesel is 53kW.

I found that the motor running at 1500rpm works well, but it does carbon up a bit if you don't give it a good load all the time. I'm thinking of changing it to a single cylinder motor that can run at a higher speed but quieter, due to less cylinders and smaller exhaust for urban areas.

My motor cost me nothing so I had to try it - but I suggest getting a smaller ready built genset unless you need 53kW and can capture that with a 240V genhead. SVO can then be done with a hybrid start on diesel option as these little engines are Direct Injected.

Thanks for the reply's fellas

I was going to use a purpous built 240v genhed but there rather expensive (and I'm a cheap arse ) is it possibe to pull 240v straight out of the motor? Instead of using the UPS?

Hey BJ I saw somewhere you had a small backup genset that started automaicly? Do you have any more info on that?

I just had a set of 240V contactors that would change over from the mains feed to the genset (my electrician mate wired that bit for me so it was legal) so when the power failed the gen would start (PICAXE micro used here for starter motor timing etc) and away it went. This was then fed into a 1kW UPS so the end result was un-interrupted power. This was used for my server before I had a huge battery bank.

Sounds Great, was the PICAXE module complex at all? I'm going to order some picaxe stuff soon and have a go at programing ect

PICAXE stuff is great, and if the "code" looks scary you can always use the flow chart method for making basic code. I'm making a new engine management PICAXE based controller for my new genset, so I'll post it up when I've got it working happily.
