Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi guys,
So I've got a BTR (Between Tape & Reader) board that has failed and I am painstakingly recreating it in Kicad to get a schematic.
During the process of documenting it, I came across two caps, one electrolytic, the other tantalum. They are both 10 uF, and they are both connected in parallel.
It seems odd that two of the same size but different technologies to be connected in parallel.
Has anyone else seen this? I know it works, but it seems odd.
Thanks,
John

Sure it's a tag?- paralleled electrolytic's and film/polyprop caps is quite common- electros for smoothing the DC mains ripple (low frequency, larger energy transfers) and films for stopping high frequency stuff where electro's don't work well (bleedthrough from RF transmiters)
Was common in RF stuff to see that combo, not tags tho Edited 2019-09-26 02:36 by Boppa
