I bought a chinese 600W 24v wind turbine from eBay for $700. The 3 blades are about a metre long and it makes absolutely no noise unless it is spinning at really high speeds. It came with 6 metre mast, anchors and cables and at the time I thought was a good purchase.
The unit is 3 phase and came with a rectifier/regulator that was a piece of poo. It just clicks on and off continually ranging from 24 to 30 volts rapidly. I bought another rectifier that seems to work in theory but I need to ask someone about this 'theory'.
When I use a multimeter the single phase side reads the battery voltage of 24 'ish volts, but even in a strong wind the other side(3 phase) reads 0.4(fluctuating by + or - 0.3) So even when my spec grav is really low on cloudy days the wind gen doesn't seem to kick in as the voltage might be 23V or so.
Big Question....How can I trick the rectifier to charge when the spec. gravity is low but the voltage is just below normal?

The new chinese mills have a much better blade set.

There is probably nothing wrong with the new rectifier. The issue is you are trying to measure AC volts with a DC meter. Don't work very well. A rectifier is not a regulator.

Better off measuring current to see how the mill is working. The problem may be that the windmill has broken the new rectifier. These windmills, 300W can produce 700-800W, so the 600W could go above 1kW, probably has already. check to see if the rectifier is OK.

You still need to get a regulator. I worry nwhen the bat volts are below 25 during discharging. Battery maintenance is a science. Without good control of charging, the battery life will be reduced.

Gordon.

BTW how does the cloud status affect the windmill? Is the windmill still turning/operating like when new?

Gordon,
I have 18 solar panels connected to a PL-60 Plasmatronics regular. I would like to plug wind into that but don't have knowledge base.I have two banks of 4 x 6V 24 batteries in total, lead acid batteries)

Q. How do I measure current?
Q2. How do I check rectifier?

I have a regulator 'thingy' on one set of that act like a bar heater when the power exceeds 26 Volts, plus the Plasmatronic.

The wind gen hasn't changed speeds that I can tell. It may start up in less wind speed but it doesn't overspin unless I disconnect the rectifier. Then it literally 'flies', so I don't disconnect when there's any wind.

Sorry. This must be a trick question because cloud cover shouldn't affect a wind generator should it? It certainly affects solar amps.

Pete
