Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi MacGyver,

Can you can get to the picture upload box, and then the message with the please wait for upload and OK button. If You don't get the OK button, the browser is blocking something. You may have a line on the top of the browser to click to allow the upload, and then just repeat the process.

Gordon.

Hi MacGyver

Can you try another computer? Preferably a PC, not a Apple. I want to see if its a Apple/Safari issue.

Hi MacGyver,

can you do these first 3 steps?

After you click the OK, it is best to wait for the link coding to appear in the Post Reply window.

If you see some screens like these below, then posting pictures will be a problem.

The uploaded files will appear in your profile, so even if the link is broken, the pictures could still be viewed from the forum.

Gordon.

PS BTW you have uploaded pictures of an AIR-X windmill and your avatar, so what is different now.

Here is a link to one of your own pictures.your pictureEdited by GWatPE 2009-10-07

Bugger, I thought I had that error fixed.

When that happens the image has uploaded but didn't resize. Basically the component that does the resize didn't wake up in time, so the script fell over. If you try it again it works perfectly, its just the first image upload after several hours that falls over.

I'll try a different approach.

Glenn

Glenn, last time I tried to post an oversize picture it did not get re sized either, just outright rejected.
I then used a free program called 'Irvanview' to re size the first dimension to 600 and all works well.

Yikes!

This is getting really complicated. Glen: My PC has been in the closet for
around 6 years; I don't know if it'll even boot up any more. We have Macs
all around now; 5 of them!

I'll try to find time later this week or weekend to sift through everyone's
suggestions. Thanks for all the help everyone.

"mispelt" . . . misspelled? :O)

Thanks MacGyver, I'm glad I'm not the only one

I have thought a lot of this variable pitch.
I have tested one factory made.
I know two in Finland who have been working with that a long time, self builders.

My advice; do not !

It is unreliable.
Keep it simple and strong.

Thanks for the stern advice. Too late; I've already started building things.

My goal is to make this a mill and lathe project, so it can be duplicated by
others. A mill isn't absolutely necessary; it depends on how much you
like using a hack saw and file, I suppose.

One thing I should tell you is my blades are seldom longer than 24 inches
root to tip. They are made of solid, 6061 T-6 aluminum flat plate. They
are NOT air-foil shaped (but are symmetrical section!).

All my windmills do is pump air and I never thought it worth the trouble
to build fancy blades. Each blade weighs in at UNDER a pound (metrically
challenged!) The added centrifugal force is actually quite small, so
variations in spring strength and tension probably will not matter that
much (I think!).

As soon as the metal gets here (I had to order fresh materials from
"www.Onlinemetals.com"), I'll fire up the mill and get some pictures
posted. The pictures will likely be on another server, as I've had problems
(an understatement!) posting stuff here in the past.

On the first point.

If you have shaped the edges of the flat section evenly on both sides of the flat, then this is an airfoil. You may not have a traditional lifting section with high lift to drag ratio, but still a symetrical section of low form drag airfoil.

On the second point.

I have just quoted your post, and there are embedded text control characters in it. Many readers write in a program other than the Post Reply window. They then just copy and paste to it when ready. This can cause a narrow formatted post, that does not flow when the browser window is resized, and makes a posting fill more pages than should be required on a larger monitor. You should be able to test these aspects yourself. You might find it useful to spend a bit of time, editing your own posts and seeing how the text is layed out, and then find a way that works best with the forum.

My browser sometimes comes up with an information line to get permission when uploading potentially damaging scripts. It would seem that your browser is blocking scripts. The scripts are a necessary part of the upload process, and you should be able to temporarily enable them to allow picture uploads etc. This is not a forum problem, likely a Mac/browser setting permissions problem at your end.

Thanks for the heads up. That's pretty much what Glen said a month or
so ago.

I don't do the copy & paste trick; I just type in this little box and what
happens, happens. I don't understand all the computer-eze nor do I
have a clue how to fix stuff.

Glen said my Mac automatically "corrects" code, but in so doing, messes
up the posting. If you were to check ALL my posts, you'll see they are
narrow-formatted. That's just the way it comes out; I'm not doing
anything intentionally to make it happen. In fact, I clearly remember
asking in one of my posts if anyone knew why all my posts were skinny
and the rest of the crew's were margin to margin.

I use a Mac principally because I don't have to run a firewall, but maybe
I'll purchase a laptop to use strictly on the forum. That would make
everything work normally and if the thing got infected with a virus
(something a Mac is immune from!), I could just reformat the thing and
carry on.

I'd rather spend the $ on some new tooling, but I'll see how it goes.
Another "fix" might be to post everything to an outside Web site, but I
don't wish to draw traffic away from the 4m. What's a boy to do?

Edit:

Answer: Clueless! Mechanical stuff I understand; computers jeeeesh!

This is getting off topic, but...

I've done some research and the line wrap is a issue with Safari and Chrome. These browsers insert a line feed character automatically when the line wraps, not necessarily a good thing. I'm looking at a couple of fixes which involve the use of non standard HTML, thats OK but I want ot make sure it doesnt affect firefox/IE users. The other option is to slightly widen the text box, and make the text font slightly smaller, so each line has more text befor it wraps.

Either way I'll have it sorted tonight, I'll post a new thread when its done.

I tried emailing you from your profile and got this:

Sorry, only members with sufficient permission can access this page.

Please email me at my gmail address and I'll send it to you. It's too large to
put on the 4m. Thanks.

It does sound like cookies are turned off. And Javascript is having problems. Either way, I would like to sort it out for the next Apple Safari user. The forum should work for all users, independant of their OS and browser.

If you can MacGyver, I would like you to try accessing the forum from a Windows PC, just so you can see how it should work. Do you have a nearby friend who has Windows?

If I had a apple I could look into it, but I dont.

I stay logged in; the constant pest!

I don't know how to turn cookies off and if I go to my preferences page
under "Security" there are bazillions of them listed, so my take on that is
they are turned "on".

I use the computer for the 4m as well as for banking and I also keep my
company's books on an Excel program here. That's about it.

I don't visit dirty-picture sites or stuff like that, so I don't use the "Private
Browsing" feature, which to my knowledge merely erases the "History"
and doesn't mess with the cookies, so that's not it. I'll try logging in from
a PC as soon as I run across one, but that seems to me like a waste of
time, since almost everybody else uses PC's. I think it's an Apple /
browser problem like Glen mentioned.

This is not apparently the case. I can see that presently you are not logged in.

You are logged in when you make a posting though. This is the time you should try and email Gizmo.

Hymmm . . . that's odd. The little thingy next to my name at the top of the page always says "Logout[MacGyver]" and I'm supposing that means I'm logged in, right?

I was feeling guilty about this thread getting so "OFF TOPIC", but then I realized "I" started the thread, so it's okay. I'll turn it around again sooner or later and we'll get back to the feathering mechanism I'm struggling to build in my garage-shop. Between phone calls and grandkids, I'm not getting much done lately!

I'll try sending Glen that email again, like you said. Thanks.

Edit:
Hey! I just successfully emailed Glen from his profile. Whoopie! Maybe I'm not actually Dutch as I thought, but rather Martian or some other species that has a built-in electric or magnetic field so every time I get around electronics, they go haywire! Edited by MacGyver 2009-10-11
